Mary Jane “MJ” Hordies, 63, dies

Columbus, OH — Mary Jane “MJ” Hordies, 63, of Washington, Pa., died April 29, 2024, in Washington Hospital.

She was a well-known caretaker at The Meadows for 44 years.

She was born Oct. 1, 1960, in Washington, a daughter of the late Donald C. “Fats” and Elizabeth “Bette” Jean Sala Lemon. She lived her life in the Washington area and was a 1978 graduate of Chartiers-Houston High School.

She had been a caretaker of horses for various stables based at The Meadows, including those of Dane Snyder, where she cared for her favorite horse, Rowdy-Bush, and the last being with the Norm Parker Stable.

“It was a privilege to have Mary Jane be a part of the Meadows horse family for many years,” said Rich Gillock, a past president of the Meadows Standardbred Owners Association. “She was a great worker and an even better person.”

Left behind to cherish her memory is her beloved son, Adam (Emily Stiffler); daughter, Amanda Dailey; sister, Marcy, with whom she made her home; grandchildren, Corey, Zach and Mia; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Kimberly Jean.

Friends and family are welcome from 2-8 p.m. Sunday (May 5) at Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services Inc., Joseph P. Salandra LFD owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike St., Canonsburg, 724.745.8120. Services will be held at 7 p.m. with Pastor Joe DiDonato from The Meadows Chaplaincy officiating.
