Maryland Sires Stakes rivalries renewed at Rosecroft

Ft. Washington, MD — Last year Tenouttaten and Jewett each took a final of the Maryland Sires Stakes freshman male trot. Both scored what would have been pari-mutuel upsets and heading into next week’s $85,000 final, both may be underdogs again, despite solid performances Tuesday night (May 9) at Rosecroft.

In preliminary leg two, Jewett grabbed command, only to see Tenouttaten power out of the pocket to edge clear and win the $10,000 warm-up leg for next week’s final. How Doo You Goo was third after a break at the start and may still be the betting favorite in the final next week.

“He was very good tonight. He got a good trip and capitalized on it,” driver Jonathan Roberts said about Tenouttaten. The homebred of trainer Kerry Welty is now two-for-seven lifetime with earnings of $50,132.

Rivals Smooth Rocket and Babes All In took Tuesday night preliminaries for Russell Foster and Jared Moyer, respectively, in the sophomore colt and gelding pace category.

Val’s Girl, chased all last year by Spy’s Last Game, has a new potential rival in Morgans All In, however, she like all others, hasn’t passed Val’s Girl yet. The daughter of Rusty’s For Real is now a perfect 12-for-12, holding off Morgans All In to reign supreme heading into next week’s big money final for 3-year-old filly pacers. Roger Plante was at the lines as always for trainer Steve LeBlanc.

Joyces Real Honey will also be a factor in that filly final after taking her preliminary leg for Victor Kirby and yrainer Bryan Truitt.

Rounding out the Sires Stakes legs was a thrilling finish to the 3-year-old filly trot as Call Me Goo got by Goolishness to win for a second straight week. Roberts guided the winner for trainer Jason Skinner.

Foster won one non-betting and four on the wagering card while Roberts also won four under the lights and one non-wagering race as well. Moyer had an early non-wagering score and won the finale on the Tuesday night card. Plante won twice as well.
