North Jackson, OH – Melisa “Missy” Blazek, 57, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, following a brief but courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by family with love, laughter and “Missy stories.”
She was the cherished daughter of Joan and the late Allen Ernest Blazek.
Born Jan. 17, 1969, in Youngstown, Missy grew up at the family’s Lakeside Golf Course in Lake Milton and graduated from Western Reserve High School in 1987. From the time she was a little girl, Missy’s radiant smile, contagious laugh and larger-than-life presence could light up any room. If Missy was there, you knew it.
She had an extraordinary gift for making people feel seen. Whether she met a new co-worker or stranger, introductions quickly turned into conversations, and conversations often became friendships. Missy was authentic, hardworking, fiercely loyal and always up for a little mischief. She faced every challenge with the same humor, resilience and infectious spirit that defined her life. Even during her darkest days, she found ways to brighten the lives of those around her.
Horses captured her heart early, but so did animals in need. Countless stray dogs and cats found their way to her because she never passed one without stopping to help.
Her love of horses became a lifelong calling. It began in 4-H showing horses, continued alongside her dad at Lakeside Racing Stables and grew into a decadeslong career as a racehorse trainer. Most recently, she worked in the Test Barn for the Horse Racing Integrity and Welfare Unit (HIWU), continuing her commitment to the welfare of racehorses while earning the friendship of colleagues throughout the racing community.
Pompano Beach, Florida, was her happy place, where she celebrated her final birthday with sunshine and family. She enjoyed time with friends at Geneva-on-the-Lake.
Halloween was her favorite holiday and dressing as a witch became her signature tradition. Listening to music made Missy happy, especially emotional country songs. Even the saddest lyrics made her smile because they reminded her of someone she loved or a sentimental memory.
She was endlessly proud of her children, Abby and Wyatt, often saying they were her greatest accomplishment. She eagerly anticipated becoming a grandmother in October, a role she was already embracing with excitement and love.
Missy leaves behind the loves of her life: her children, Abby and Wyatt (Maia); her mother, Joan; her sister, Michele (Dave); her brother, Mark (Judi); numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends, and her faithful dog, Buddy. She is reunited in eternal peace with her father; her beloved brother, Mitch; her grandparents; aunts, Roselyn and Dorothy; cousin, Jason; and many animals who surely ran to meet her.
One of Missy’s favorite expressions was “Dale gas!”–“Step on it!” Though her journey ended far too soon, her spirit lives on in everyone she loved, encouraging us to smile bigger, laugh louder, and always Dale gas! It has been said that a person’s wealth is measured not by what they own but by the lives they touch. By that measure, Missy was a millionaire.
One of her final friendships was with Willie Nelson, a gentle therapy horse. In honor of Missy’s love for animals and compassionate heart, the family requests memorial contributions be made to sponsor a therapy horse in Missy’s memory through Victory Gallop (https://www.victorygallop.org/). This nonprofit provides horseback riding for children facing behavioral, emotional and life-threatening challenges.
A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, at St. James Catholic Church in North Jackson, followed by a Celebration of Life, where family and friends will gather to laugh and share “Missy stories.”
