Michael Andrew, 84, dies

Columbus, OH — Michael Davis Andrew passed away peacefully on Dec. 20 in Gorham, Maine, on the farm where he grew up. He was 84.

Mr. Andrew bred and raised 168 trotters, including the likes of Dan Patch Award winner Obrigado 6,1:50.3 ($1,923,834); Breeders Crown and Kentucky Futurity winner Rebuff 3,1:49.4 ($962,490); and his favorite homebred, Likeabatoutahell 7,1:51.3 ($1,035,643). He served as a commissioner for the Maine State Harness Racing Commission, vice president and president of the Maine Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association.

Off the racetrack, Mr. Andrew, who graduated from Cornell University and earned his Ph.D. at Harvard, was named a Distinguished Professor at the University of New Hampshire, where he taught education for 43 years. He was an avid outdoorsman, polo player, skilled blacksmith, author, ironwork forger and a breeder of Hampshire sheep.

Mr. Andrew is survived by his wife, Anita Andrew (née Anastosopoulous); sons, Patrick and Christopher; daughters, Stephanie LaRochelle, Katherine Moore and Suzanna Foster; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Sarah Andrew; and sisters, Sarah “Jane” Beever and Karen Alden.

Calling hours will be on Jan. 20, 2023, from 4-6 p.m. at Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham, Maine. There will be a celebration of life at the First Parish Congregational Church, 1 Church Street, Gorham, Maine, on Jan. 21, 2023, at 11 a.m.
