Columbus, OH – October’s issue of Hoof Beats magazine features the Meadows Standardbred Owners Association’s Evan Pattak who has been involved with writing, broadcasting and promoting racing for four decades at The Meadows in Pennsylvania.
In his story, “Under the Radar,” Hoof Beats Editor James Witherite writes, “Pattak’s print and broadcast coverage of harness racing at The Meadows has been instrumental in the mid-major circuit achieving big-league credibility and a nationwide following.”

In this month’s USTA executive column “Watching the Wheels,” Executive Vice President and CEO Mike Tanner discusses why no-effect thresholds are necessary to deal with the rash of contamination positives that are unfairly plaguing Thoroughbred trainers who are being subjected to suspensions and fines by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) and their enforcement arm, the Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit (HIWU).
“If a drug is inadvertently, not deliberately, introduced into the bloodstream but has no pharmacological impact or performative effect to the human or equine, there’s no penalty,” writes Tanner in explaining no-effect thresholds. “In this day and age, when cutting-edge drug testing capabilities metaphorically can detect a grain of sand in an Olympic-sized swimming pool, that only makes sense.”

The October issue also includes features on Yonkers International Trot winner Jiggy Jog S and owner Anthony Miller who is enjoying success as an owner of both racehorses and show horses.
