Pinehurst matinee and qualifiers a huge success

Pinehurst, NC — After weather postponed the annual Pinehurst matinee from Saturday to Sunday, the races went without delay on a 72 degree day under a perfect Carolina blue sky.

A crowd of nearly 4,000 attended the six-race card, highlighted by the Mayor’s Derby won by Councilwoman Lydia Boesch and Francisco Del Cid.

The first crop of Six Pack had two winners on the day, Miss Dior from the Homer Hochstetler stable and St Pauli Girl from the DR Ackerman stable.

On Wednesday (April 5), nine qualifiers were held, with two new track records.

Ponda Warrior, last year’s Indiana 3-year-old Sires Stakes champion from the Homer and Jay Hochstetler stable, won in 1:52 with Brian Sears in the bike and Ponda Jet, a 3-year-old Dover Dan gelding from the same stable, won in 1:54.4 with Sears up.

It was a perfect day with the sun shining and 80 degrees.

A heartfelt thank you to all of the horsemen and residents for the generous participation in making the matinee such a success for the Pinehurst Driving Club.
