Columbus, OH — Richard L. “Dick” Neff, 95, died unexpectedly on Oct. 13, 2023, surrounded by his family following an unforeseen surgical complication.
Mr. Neff was born to J Price and Francis Bidwell Neff on May 3, 1928.
As a second generation horseman, he continued his passion for harness racing while serving in the United States Marine Corps and the Columbus Police Department. After retirement, he continued racing horses full-time. He was actively involved until his recent death. His family remains actively involved in the sport today.
Mr. Neff was a well liked and respected horseman racing primarily in Ohio for over 50 years. Although his racing career began before records were kept, suffice it to say that he trained and drove many successful horses.
Mr. Neff, affectionately nicknamed “Pop” by many, was known for telling stories about his colorful life while also offering advice and guidance to countless others. He was truly beloved and an inspiration to all.
Per Dick’s request, a Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday (Nov. 5) from 12-4 p.m. at Scioto Downs, 6000 S. High St., Columbus, OH 43207 in the Three Diamonds Room. Friends and family are encouraged to come and share stories while paying tribute to a life well lived.
