Marion, IN — Robert D. Black, 79, passed away on September 23, 2026, in Ft. Wayne, IN. Born on August 8, 1947, in Milton, Iowa, “Bob” lived a life marked by devotion to his work, pride in his country, and deep affection for his family and friends. A high school graduate, he grew up in a harness racing family and trained Standardbreds throughout his life. He retired in 2000 after many years working, training and caring for horses in Ohio, Indiana, and especially on the Chicago circuit.

Bob honorably served in the United States Army during Vietnam and was a Bronze Star Medal recipient. He was very proud to be a veteran and an American, and that pride remained an important part of his life. He was a member of Jalapa Chapel Church in Marion, Ind. Those who knew Bob also knew how much he enjoyed the simple things of life and the company of others. In his retirement he loved fishing and spending time at the local cafe with friends, where stories were shared, jokes were told, and laughter was always heard. He also enjoyed smoking cigars with his brothers-in-law.
Above all, he loved to have fun, and his great sense of humor was a memorable part of the way he connected with others. Bob will be remembered for a life full of hard work, loyal friendship, family ties, and good humor.
He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Black; his sisters Mary Dudzik, Linda Thaxton, Candy (Pete) Hostetler, and Billie Jo (Runt) Icenhour; and his special surrogate grandchildren, Cameron and Lynx Carr and Lucy Morgan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Billy Dean and Rozena (Rater) Black; his wife of 47 years, Jeanne (Sowash) Black, who passed away on September 2, 2018; and his brothers, John Black, Gary Black, and Mike Black. Burial with military honors was held at the Marion National Cemetery, in Marion, Ind., where he was laid to rest with his late wife.
