Ron Ruggles, 82, dies

Pompano Beach, FL — Ron Ruggles, one of harness racing’s most dedicated and loyal owners, died Jan. 4. He was 82.

A native of New Jersey who resided in Pompano Beach, Fla., Mr. Ruggles was a die-hard racing fan who regularly visited the Meadowlands, as well as Roosevelt and Yonkers Raceways. He was involved in the business for over 60 years, competing under the nom de course M T Pocket Stables.

Mr. Ruggles owned and bred over 200 horses, many of which had the word “Pockets” in their names. His top performers included Georgie’s Pockets 4,1:55h ($256,609), Guinevere Hall 3,1:52.3 ($491,153), Fleurie 3,1:53.2s ($321,805) and Taurasi p,3,1:48.3 ($183,150). At the time of his death, his trainers were Tony Alagna, Peter Wrenn, Dan Altmeyer and Mike Wilder.

A memorial race at the Red Mile during the Grand Circuit meet is being planned in Mr. Ruggles’ honor.
