Sinatra De Vie wins Open Handicap in track record at Rosecroft

Ft. Washington, MD — Sinatra De Vie overtook his stablemate College Tuition in the final 16th of the mile to record a 1:53.2 win in the $11,000 Open Handicap Trot at Rosecroft on Tuesday night (March 12).

Johnathan Ahle was in the bike for owner-trainer Eric Foster as the son of Southwind Frank set a new 4-year old gelding mark in the process. Sinatra De Vie was a $9,000 Lexington Selected Sale yearling purchase and has now won 10 of 32 starts and pushed his earnings over $125,000. He is now 2-for-2 in 2024.

Getting away last in a nine horse field, Ahle bided his time as College Tuition and Jared Moyer held off a challenge from Saylor and Trae Porter down the backside. Just before the three-quarter mark, Ahle tipped his charge three wide and won a tough sprint to the wire by three-quarters of a length.

“He is a nice one, he’s got a wicked brush,” Ahle said.

It was the second win for Ahle on the night as he also won with St Lad’s Bijou for Michael Hall.

While Moyer was second best in the feature, he did pick up two wins on the card as he won with Roll The Music for Brian and Katie Callahan and took the finale at 21-1 with Dice Dice Baby for Michael Somerville and trainer Rusty Cox.

Trae Porter swept the Daily Double, winning the opener with Swan Harbor for John Wagner and the second with Robmotion Bluechip for Billy Andrews.

Yogi Sheridan took a division of the Mid-Atlantic Drivers Club with Dirt On My Boots for Paul Reid and Alvin Stafford, and trainer Jody Dunning. The other division went to Adrian Wisher Jr. and Talk To Me Artie for John Wagner.

Jonathan Roberts produced the bargain of the night as Stress Free made it 2-for-2 in 2024, as the daughter of Lazarus N rallied from eighth for trainer Brian Burton and paid a whopping $20.60.

Both Billy Carter and his son William scored wins on the card as dad won with CS Explosive Chip and son won with Speaking Of Coffee for trainer Bryson Dunning and owners Howard and Josh Kaufman. The younger Carter also won with Baby Doll Jen for John Bosch and trainer Lewis Nunes.

Chuck Perry scored an impressive win as Toy With Me made a successful 3-year-old debut, winning in 1:55.2. Perry trains and co-owns the son of Heston Blue Chip with Jason Fitzgerald.

The Jackpot Hi-5 carryover stands at $17,077.49 for Thursday night’s 10th race.
