Southwind Icenfire upsets top Dover distaffers

Dover, DE — Long shot Southwind Icenfire scorched Wednesday night’s (Feb. 7) Mares Winners Over/Select Pace field at Bally’s Dover, posting a 12-1 upset in decisive fashion.

Jody and Southwind Icenfire dueled for early control while 1-2 favorite Majorca N retreated to fourth after floating forward. Jody briefly held the lead reaching the opening quarter in :28, only for Southwind Icenfire to vacate the pocket and rush to the top past that station. Majorca N sprinted up to challenge Southwind Icenfire for the lead but was rebuffed and parked out. The two mares raced side by side to the half in :56.3 before a tired Majorca N dropped back sharply and clogged the outside tier. Southwind Icenfire accelerated to the three-quarters in 1:24.2, and the daughter of Betting Line drew clear steadily to win by 6-1/2 lengths in 1:52. Party Cruiser shook loose late for second; Tae finished third.
