Harrington, DE — Breakaway Racing and Yorwollahan Racing’s Speed Away ($5.40, Corey Callahan) was a 1:56.1 winner in the $22,500 Open Trot on Wednesday (Sept. 23) at Harrington Raceway.
Baby Boy (Ross Wolfenden), at 3-1 odds, took the lead immediately from post 4 and cruised through fractions of :28.2, :58 and 1:26.4 while opening up a 3-length lead at the top of the stretch. That lead quickly diminished, though, as the hard-charging Speed Away nailed him at the wire to score his 33rd career win.
Speed Away, an 8-year-old Father Patrick gelding, notched his ninth win of the year for trainer Nick Callahan. The former Harrington Horse of the Meet has won 20 races over the half-mile racetrack in his terrific career, during which he has amassed more than $605,000 in lifetime earnings. It was one of three wins on the card for Corey Callahan.
Dreamville Stable’s Dyladmar ($2.60, Russell Foster) was a 1:57.1 winner in the $18,000 Open 2 Handicap Trot for trainer Jay Gannon.
Driver Brandon Givens also had three wins on the card, as did trainer Chuck Crissman Jr., who had a pair of winners for owner Barbara Boese. Eddie Dennis had a training and driving double.
Next week, racing at Harrington will be headlined by the first leg of the Delaware Standardbred Breeders’ Fund (DSBF) action for 2-year-olds, featuring $20,000 divisions nightly. The top eight point earners from each division will return to compete in the $110,000 finals, held Oct. 12-14.
