Stars to shine in Big M qualifiers

Hightstown, NJ — North America Cup and Little Brown Jug winner It’s My Show, Milstein Memorial winner and Jug runner-up Seven Colors, and O’Brien Award recipient Pass Line were among 84 horses entered in Saturday morning’s qualifiers at The Meadowlands.

Those three horses will be making their Q debuts, as will Governor’s Cup winner Captain Luke, Kentucky and New Jersey Sire Stakes champion Better Is Nice, Bluegrass Stakes-winning male trotters Mars Hill and Smart Schooner, Pennsylvania Sire Stakes 3-year-old filly pacing champion Odds On Hail Mary, and Ontario Sire Stakes 3-year-old male pacing champion Moment Is Here.

It’s My Show, trained by Linda Toscano, finished no worse than second in 13 of 16 races last year at age 3 and earned $1.07 million. The gelding’s earnings were second to only Horse of the Year Confederate among all pacers in 2023.

Seven Colors, trained by Andrew Harris, was third in purses among last season’s 3-year-old male pacers. He also counted the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes championship among his victories last year and was second to Confederate in the Cane Pace.

Pass Line hit the board in all 13 of her starts last year at age 2, winning 10. She captured the Ontario Sire Stakes Super final and was second in the Breeders Crown for trainer Ron Burke.

Captain Luke and Better Is Nice both come from the barn of trainer Tony Alagna. Better Is Nice earned $510,120 last season to lead all 2-year-old male pacers while Captain Luke earned $332,109 to rank seventh.

Others qualifying on Saturday include Nifty Norman-trained Sambuca Hanover, who won last season’s Kindergarten Classic Series final for 2-year-old filly trotters, and 5-year-old male trotter Periculum, a winner on the Grand Circuit at ages 2 and 3 who spent last season competing in Sweden. He is trained by Marcus Melander.

Qualifiers begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at The Meadowlands. Visit the Big M website here for program pages for the qualifiers.
