Schedule for Pennsylvania-sired pari-mutuel championships
With the last preliminary rounds of the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes and Pennsylvania Stallion Series completed on Sunday (Aug. 30), there’s scant time to catch one’s breath before this coming Labor Day Weekend’s staging of the Championship events of these pari-mutuel programs for the premier Pennsylvania-sired 2- and 3-year-olds, in aggregate worth over $3 million for the cream of the Pennsylvania crop.
Philly hosts final PA-sired prelims
The time to distribute over $3 million to the best Pennsylvania-sired youngsters, by age, sex, and gait, will come this week after the last of the preliminary rounds, the fourth and final leg for 3-year-old male trotters, raced in Sire Stakes and Stallion Series competition on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 30) at Harrah’s Philadelphia, which will host the 3-year-old Sire Stakes Championships and consolations next Sunday, Sept. 6. Stakes purses on the afternoon totaled $138,604.
Svanstedt, Captain Corey still teaming for stakes success
Five years ago to the week, trotter Captain Corey and horseman Åke Svanstedt teamed to win the Earl Beal Trot up the road from Harrah’s Philadelphia at Pocono Downs. Five years on and the pair are still teaming for winner’s circle visits, as now-sire Captain Corey and trainer-driver Svanstedt combined to win the two divisions of the fourth and final preliminary leg of Pennsylvania Sire Stakes for freshman male trotters on Sunday (Aug. 23) at Philly, which offered $170,842 between the two PaSS divisions and three sections of the PA Stallion Series.
Zeron, Palone dominate as freshman filly pacers take center stage
A pair of $63,826 Pennsylvania Sire Stakes “Meadow Cheer” divisions, accompanied by three $20,000 Stallion Series events, brought 2-year-old pacing fillies to a rain-soaked Hollywood Casino at The Meadows on Thursday afternoon (Aug. 20).
Sophomores shine in PASS action at The Meadows
Saturday’s (Aug. 15) card at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows was packed with sophomore Pennsylvania Sire Stakes trotting action. The filly division featured two $49,000 Stenographer divisions and three Stallion Series divisions, while the colts competed in two $49,000 Super Bowl divisions and two Stallion Series divisions.
Fast fillies at Pocono, but few favorites
Pennsylvania-sired stakes competition for 2-year-old pacing fillies featuring purses totaling $210,455 was held during the Sunday (July 19) twilight card at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania, with three divisions of Sire Stakes and four of Stallion Series. The stakes action followed in the early weekend’s trend of favorites not getting the job done. This second preliminary round ended with no double winners in either division, and only one chalk was victorious.

There were two constants as 3-year-old trotting fillies raced for over $200,000 in two divisions of Pennsylvania Sire Stakes and five divisions of the Pennsylvania Stallion Series at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania during a Sunday (June 14) twilight card.
Endurance delivers in PASS action at Pocono
Endurance, the trotting colt who was outstanding at 2 and has continued on at 3 to be one of the favorites for the Hambletonian, was again impressive at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon (June 6), when he won his $50,502 division of the second prelim of his group’s Pennsylvania Sire Stakes.
