Columbus, OH – Thomas Calder “Tom” Wine II, 62, passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday (Aug.4). He was born on October 10, 1963, in Englewood, California.
Tom was a horseman through and through. Harness racing was not simply a profession or pastime for him—it was a lifelong passion and an important part of who he was. His career in the racing world began in 1979 and spanned more than four decades.
Throughout his career as a driver, Tom made 1,163 starts, earning 118 wins, 127 second-place finishes, 111 third-place finishes, and more than $425,000 in purses. As a trainer, he made an impressive 8,642 starts, with 1,323 wins, 1,191 second-place finishes, 1,071 third-place finishes, and more than $5.8 million in earnings. He also owned dozens of horses throughout his life. However, Tom’s legacy within harness racing cannot be measured by statistics alone. It lives on in the horses he cared for, the friendships he formed, and the respect he earned throughout the racing community.
Tom was also known for his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. He was always the first to crack a joke, lighten the mood, or make those around him laugh. His stories, laughter, and unmistakable personality will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Above all else, Tom loved his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who took tremendous pride in those he loved. He is survived by his loving wife, Jill; his son, Tee; his daughter, Brandy; and his beloved grandson, Colt, who brought him immeasurable pride and joy. He also leaves behind many extended family members, friends, fellow horsemen, and members of the harness racing community.
Tom’s race here may be finished, but his legacy will continue through his family, the horses he loved, and the countless lives he touched along the way. His humor, passion, and love will never be forgotten.
