Dayton, PA — The Somebeachsomewhere sophomore pacing filly Tonianne tied the 1:58.4 track record for her group during a two-day Sire Stakes racing event at the Dayton (PA) Fairgrounds on Wednesday (July 28). She was the only magic miler at the meet, and she became the first horse on the 2021 PA fair circuit to achieve two distinctions: two track records, and two miles in 2:00 or less.

In winning at Dayton, Tonianne also defeated Tiamogonedancen, who had just shattered the all-age record at Bedford by pacing in 1:55.2 last week. The Dayton track record she tied was first established by More More More in 2019. Tonianne is owned by the Andy Miller Stable Inc. and Louis Willinger.

Tonianne is trained and was driven by Todd Schadel, whose barn pulled off another big feat: they swept the 3-year-old trot “A” Sire Stakes for both sexes.

The Bar Hopping colt Top Me Off, the fastest trotter at the fairs this year with a 1:58.3 at Silver Springs, was the only one of the four defending Fair Sire Stakes champions, all in action at Dayton, to win, in 2:04.3. The Donato Hanover colt By A Hoff Hanover also won for Schadel in 2:04. Among the fillies, R Speed Of Light (Sebastian K S) won in 2:03.4, and Todd’s son Cody handled Cheesy Hanover (Cantab Hall) during her 2:04.3 triumph.

Tuesday was devoted to the 2-year-olds and another Dayton record was missed only by a fifth by the Donato Hanover–TSM Aphrodite T miss TSM Loyal T, whose 2:04 victory was just a tick off the local standard set by Nicole Hanover in 2017. Trainer Bob Krenitsky Jr.’s filly, driven by Eric Neal, has turned her form around with her second straight win for owner Theodore Tomson.

The Betting Line–Strait N Great pacing filly Bettor Strait N Up is the only horse to post four victories at the fairs in 2021 after a 2:05.1 win. Co-owned by driver Tony and trainer Linda Schadel, Bettor Strait N Up is undefeated in her career, since the four fair starts constitute her only purse starts to date.

It was noted that during the day when the youngest horses were racing, a total of six races were won by drivers 70-plus years young: Roger Hammer (75) and Dave Brickell (73) both won twice, and Fred Uber Jr. (77) and Sam Beegle (70) both won once.

The Pennsylvania fair circuit now travels to the only four-day stand on its calendar, the Clearfield County Fair, just west of the center of the state. The program will start at 1 p.m. on Sunday; on Monday through Wednesday, the races will begin at high noon.
