Track record at York Fair falls to Markup Hanover

York, PA — The second of two days of Pennsylvania Sire Stakes fair racing at the York Fair, featuring 2-year-olds, saw a trotting colt set a divisional track record — bettering a mark from a “stablemate” set six years ago.

Markup Hanover scored in a track record time of 2:03.4.

The new line in the York annals was etched by the Cantab Hall colt Markup Hanover, who drew well clear when likely stretch rival Albany House made a break and stopped the timers in 2:03.4.

Todd Schadel, also trainer and co-owner with Hall of Famer Jim Simpson, guided Markup Hanover to a clocking that was one-fifth of a second faster than the 2006 time of Light Headed — who was also a Schadelite.

For the day Todd, co-owner with Roger Hammer of the 2005 Hambletonian winner Vivid Photo, had a quadruple as a sulkysitter, conditioner and co-owner, boosting his two-day totals to seven, six, and five, respectively. (To keep it “in the family,” Todd’s wife Christine co-owns the three Tuesday that Simpson doesn’t.)

The McMullen Stable has certainly had a fine year on the PA fair circuit, especially with their trotting fillies, as on Tuesday the Broadway Hall miss Lady Broadway clinched the seasonlong fair points title for her division with a 2:04.1 victory, part of a double on the day for driver Bryce Truitt and trainer John McMullen, Jr, also co-owner with Michele McMullen.

The only other two horses who have clinched points honors with two stops to go are the McMullen’s 3-year-old squaregaiting miss Erin Kirsten and the freshman pacing colt Falcon’s Breeze, from the powerhouse Roger Hammer Stable.

The other McMullenite winning Tuesday was the Sierra Kosmos colt Montour County, placed first in a division of his trot.

Joining all of the above in Tuesday’s multiple-win category was trainer/driver Steve Schoeffel, who had wins behind the Cantab Hall trotting filly Olivet De Vie in 2:07.3 for Stephen Lander and Virginia and Kathy Schoeffel, and the Allamerican Native pacing colt Skylite’s Finale in a 2:01.3 jaunt for Virginia Schoeffel, Michael and Lori Callipare and Ryan Zidek.

Fastest mile of the day belonged to Mein Schatz, an altered son of Real Desire who won in 2:01.2 for trainer/driver Aaron Johnston, having the season of his young life, and owner James Biego.

Finishing Lines: The point standings will get a good eyeballing the final two weeks of the fair season, as the top eight throughout the season with five or more fair starts have first preference for the respective $20,000 Fair Championships at The Meadows on Saturday evening, October 13.

They’ll draw at Gratz Friday for racing this Sunday (Sept. 16) and Monday (Sept. 17), with the final fair competition of the year at the Bloomsburg Fair on Sept. 24-27.
