Twenty-four enter Kentucky Filly Futurity

by Tom LaMarra, Red Mile Communications Department

With no division standout at this point in the season, horsemen weren’t shy when the entry box for Friday’s Kentucky Filly Futurity opened Tuesday morning. Twenty-four 3-year-old fillies were entered, necessitating three divisions for the first heat of the fixture at The Red Mile.

A filly must win two heats to win the Futurity, which will run for the 113th time. The first three finishers from each division of the first heat will square off in the second heat. If the winner of the second heat didn’t win a division of the first heat, the three winners would come back for a third heat to decide the title.

In the first division, Ticket To Glide, winner of nine of 11 starts this season for owners P.W. Kinnear and D.B. Hutchins, is the morning-line favorite at 5-2. Ticket To Glide, by Yankee Glide, has been on a roll, having won four New Jersey Sires Stakes events at Freehold Raceway in her last four starts. Cat Manzi, her regular driver, was named by trainer Brett Pelling.

In the second division, the 5-2 morning-line favorite is Flawless Bluestone, a Donerail filly that finished third in the Hambletonian Oaks and second in the two-heat Filly World Trotting Derby. Owned by Carol Agins, Clare Russell, Steven Arak and Bluestone Farms, Flawless Bluestone won a Sept. 23 qualifier at The Red Mile in 1:53 4/5 and in the process defeated Vivid Photo, one of the favorites for Saturday’s Kentucky Futurity. Dave Miller is named to drive for trainer Joe Holloway.

In the third division, the 5-2 morning-line favorite is Her Culese, winner of the Filly World Trotting Derby for owners Dave McDuffee, Irving Liverman and John Fielding. Her Culese, a Muscles Yankee filly trained by Pelling, finished third most recently in the Moni Maker final behind Coulantine and Ladymatic, who are entered in the first Filly Futurity division. Ron Pierce is named to drive.
