Unraced American broodmare behind winners in Norwegian stake races

Christina Rose, a 14-year-old broodmare, bred by Peninsula Farm, sired by Chocolatier and out of Cookies N. Milk, she by Conway Hall, was involved in the winner of the Norsk Travderby, 4-year-old Born in Bergen, and the winner of the Norsk Travkriterium, 3-year-old Just Like Heaven.

Christina Rose is the dam of Born the U S A, who is the sire of Born in Bergen, but she also foaled Tears in Heaven, who is the dam of Just Like Heaven. Muscle Hill is the sire of Born the U S A and Tears in Heaven.

Christina Rose was sold at The Tattersalls Summer Mixed Sale 2013 with a Muscle Hill foal and in foal to Muscle Hill for a mere $8,500 to the Swedish agent Lars Gunnar Palm on behalf of Truls G. Pedersen, the editor of the leading Norwegian trade paper, Trav och Galopp Nytt.

What a deal, that has turned out to be.

Born in Bergen, trained by Kim Pedersen and with Björn Steine in the bike, was a very heroic winner of the Derby as he defended his leading position several times in the race. But still Born in Bergen managed to win easily, timed in 1:59.4f (mile rate). The Derby is raced over 1-5/8 miles.

Just Like Heaven, sired by Maharajah, is trained by Geir Vegard Gundersen and had his son, Magnus Teien Gundersen, in the bike. Just Like Heaven was a very easy winner, timed in 1:57f (mile rate). The Kriterium is raced over 1-5-16 miles.

The Derby is the biggest race for 4-year-old trotters in Norway and the Kriterium the biggest for 3-year-old trotters. The purse for the winner of the Derby was 850,000 NOK — or $80,000 — and the purse for the winner of The Kriterium was 650,000 NOK — or $60,000.
