Columbus, OH — William “Don” Cantrell, 76, of Oil Springs, Ky., died March 6, 2025, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
Born June 6, 1948, in Johnson County, he was the son of the late William Joseph and Kathleen (Williams).
He is survived by his loving wife, Janie (Fairchild); daughter, Amiee (Chad) Webb; son, Matt (Lyndsay); and grandchildren, Abram Webb, Henry and Holden.
Mr. Cantrell was a retired educator with the Johnson County School system. Besides being an educator, he had a love for harness racing. He became a member of the USTA in 1998 as an owner. Over the years he owned horses that raced throughout the Midwest and in Delaware. Despite being successful in many states, his favorite place to race was in his home state of Kentucky. He was blessed with many great horses over the years and just last fall he returned to the Lexington Selected Sale and purchased two new prospects and one additional from the Hoosier Classic Yearling Sale.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday (March 10) in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with Aaron Penix officiating. Burial will follow in the Lakeview Memorial Cemetery, Staffordsville. Friends may visit the Phelps & Son Funeral Home from 4-8 p.m. Sunday (March 9) and from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday prior to the service.
