Vernon, NY — Zapaca (Steeven Genois) and War Of Will (Leon Bailey) took the co-features at Vernon Downs on Saturday (Aug. 3).
Zapaca ($8.90) grabbed the $7,500 featured trot.
Zapaca led to the quarter in :27.2. He slowed things down with a :29.3 second quarter and was first to the half in :57. He cruised to three-quarters in 1:25.4.
As they reached the stretch Zapaca opened things up and made it a race for second as he won going away in 1:54.4. Match My Miracle (Frank Affrunti) was second best. Woodside Gabe (Bailey) finished third.
Zapaca is a 7-year-old gelding by Yankee Glide. He is owned by Devan Flood and trained by Gary Gibson. It was his fifth win this season. He now has 16 career victories.
War Of Will ($4.40) came flying late to capture the $7,500 featured pace.
Le Massif (Genois) pushed the gate open and led to the first quarter in :28.2. He went :28.2 again in the second quarter to be first to the half in :56.4. He continued to be well in control as he led to three-quarters in 1:24.1.
As they entered the stretch second place finisher Le Massif looked like he had it won but War Of Will came flying in deep stretch to win in a lifetime best of 1:52.
War Of Will is a 5-year-old gelding by Captaintreacherous. He is owned by Betcha Win Stable and trained by Jeff Sorenson. It was his fifth win this season and the 11th of his career.
Genois had a driving hat trick. Bailey had a driving double. Gary Gibson and Sorenson had training doubles.
