Vernissage Grif wins Gran Premio Lotteria for second straight year

The 9-year-old Italian trotter Vernissage Grif (sired by the French champion sire Love You) may never have been better. Though he had to trot outside leading Capital Mail with Gabriele Gelormini, he was strongest down the stretch and won the Gran Premio Lotteria by a length in 1:52f followed by Bleff Diba with Roberto Vecchione and Capital Mail.

The purse for the winner was 253,230 Euro.

The time for the winner was a new race record for the final, but the consolation race was won by Banderas Bi in an even faster time. Banderas Bi, also trained by Alessandro Gocciadoro, was timed in 1:51.3f — which is the world’s fastest record at a five-eighths-mile track so far in 2023.

Banderas Bi finished fourth in his elimination, but won the consolation quite easily. He is a 6-year-old Italian trotter, who is by the French sire, Ganymede.

The Lotteria had a very heavy favorite in Vivid Wise As — also a Gocciadoro-trained trotter with top French driver Matthieu Abrivard. Vivid Wise As advanced to the final after finishing second in his elimination, but in the final, he got an unlucky race and was parked out three wide for most of the race. Vivid Wise As, who has been invited to the Elitlopp, finished a disappointing seventh in 1:53.1f.
