Columbus, OH – The U.S. Trotting Association’s partnership with Merck Animal Health is part of our broader commitment to equine health and the well-being of the Standardbred horse. Our work together on microchip initiatives is one example of that commitment and of Merck’s broader efforts to advance equine health.

That work is particularly important as the threats facing horses continue to evolve.
This summer, Merck is warning about three converging threats reshaping equine health in 2026: an El Niño-driven mosquito season that is more volatile and less predictable than prior years, tick ranges expanding into regions that have historically seen lower pressure, and the first U.S. detection of New World screwworm since 1966.
While the USTA is not directly involved in this particular initiative, it is another example of the kind of research, expertise and education Merck brings to the equine industry — and why our partnership with them is so valuable.
