Columbus, OH – Downbytheseaside fillies won both $75,000 Ohio Sires Stakes events for 3-year-old pacing fillies at Eldorado Scioto Downs on Friday (Aug. 28) in identical 1:51.3 miles.
Sassy By The Sea (driven by Tyler Smith) took the first division for trainer Herman Hagerman. Leaving from post 4, Sassy By The Sea took the field past the :27.3 quarter, :56.4 half and 1:24.2 third quarter to win by a quarter-length over a fast-closing Estuary (Marvin Luna); Odds On Trickster (Luke Hanners) was third.
Sassy By The Sea, out of the Art Official mare Sassy Lady Art, was a $25,000 Ohio Selected Yearling Sale purchase from breeders Spring Haven Farm and Joe Sbrocco. Owned by Hagerman Racing and Charles Reeve, Sassy By The Sea now has five wins in eight seasonal starts with $142,810 in earnings.
In the second division, Seaside Shuffle (Chris Page) got away third off the gate as Vanna By The River (Cory Stratton) took the field to the :27 opening quarter. Page quickly pulled Seaside Shuffle and tripped the beam in :56 for the half and 1:24 for the third quarter on their way to winning by three-quarters of a length. Sea Me (Hanners) came up the passing lane to be second, with Vanna By The River finishing third.
Bred by William Walters and Joseph McLead, Seaside Shuffle is out of the Santanna Blue Chip mare Hula Shuffle and was a $115,000 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale purchase. Owned by Burke Racing, Weaver Bruscemi, Knox Services and R A S Racing, Seaside Shuffle has six wins in 25 lifetime starts with $515,992 earned.
Racing continues Saturday (Aug. 29) with a 16-race card starting at 5:25 p.m. (EDT) featuring two divisions each of 2-year-old male and filly pacers and three $50,000 divisions of 3-year-old male pacers.
Also on tap for the evening are a bunch of events geared towards families, including Corgi races, a bounce house, petting zoo, “name the foal” contest, paint a horse, hoof-o-graphs from Queenie the Shetland pony, and a horseshoe decorating station.
Looking ahead, Scioto will host Ohio Super Night on Saturday, Sept. 12, along with the $270,000 est. Jim Ewart Memorial Pace and Charlie Hill Memorial Trot.
The 91-day 2026 Eldorado Scioto Downs regular season runs through Saturday, Sept. 19. Races are held Tuesdays and Thursdays through Saturdays, with a special holiday card on Labor Day instead of the Tuesday card that week and no live racing on Friday (Sept. 18) to accommodate horsemen attending the Ohio Selected Yearling Sale. The track will then re-open for the Breeders Crown, with eliminations held Oct. 16-17 and the finals Oct. 23-24.
