New Kent, VA — Double Tax Jack’s upset victory in Colonial Downs’ fourth race on Saturday night triggered a trifecta payout of $9,949.60, second largest of the current harness campaign.
Basil Sapienza’s trotter was sent off at 22-1, though the five-year-old Thirty Two horse had a 1:58.4 winning mile on October 16th at Colonial Downs.
Double Tax Jack stayed toward the back of the 10 horse field through most of the mile, but made a move at the very end to nip Sonic Marvel by a neck in 1:58.1. The winner paid $46.00. Sonic Marvel, coming off a tenth place finish in his last outing, took second and Zizi’s Hall, a consistent trotting mare, was one-half length behind to finish third. The resulting 9-5-6 trifecta combination paid $9,949.60.
Colonial Downs hosts the $340,000 Virginia Harness Day of Champions on Sunday afternoon at the New Kent oval. The top Virginia-bred pacers and trotters will compete in eight championship divisions in the track’s richest day of the fall.
The first 2,000 paid admissions on Sunday will receive a free commemorative baseball cap.
