Alfred Z. Kowalewski, 89, dies

Columbus, OH — Alfred Z. Kowalewski, 89, lovingly known as Al Kales, a resident of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., died Nov. 16, 2022.

The longtime horse racing fixture lost his battle with pancreatic cancer and passed away peacefully in Detroit, Mich.

He was a long time competitor in the world of horse racing along with his lifetime companion and racing partner, Tekla Young.

He owned hundreds of horses over his 40-plus-year racing career, including such well known horses as Msnaughtybynature, Meadow Brook Grace and Swift Swanda. His legacy will go on as The Kales Company, which managed his sizable stable and will carry on under the direction of his beloved Tekla.

He was the loving father of Lisa (Steven) O’Donnel and Craig (Tammy); cherished grandfather of Megan, Madison, Lauren O’Donnel, and Kieran O’Donnel; and dear brother of Geri Chevillot.
