Capozzo to join Minnesota pacing stallion ranks

Capozzo p,2,1:54.1f; 3,1:50.2; 4,1:48 ($648,226) will stand his first season in 2024 at Bluff Country Equine in Minnesota.

His initial fee has been set at $2,000 and shipped semen is available.

The Bettor’s Delight stallion is owned by the husband and wife team of Anastasia Meshkova and Mike Ribant, who is handling stallion management.

Capozzo paced to his 1:48 mark as a 4-year-old on July 18, 2015 at the Meadowlands, just a week after placing second to Odds On Equuleus in 1:48.1. Capozzo was not staked at ages 2 or 3, so the $648,226 he earned was done the hard way — as a war horse.

In making the announcement, manager Mike Ribant said Capozzo’s move to a stud career follows an 11-year racing career where he raced against and beat current pacing sires such as Bit Of A Legend N, Doctor Butch, Fort Knox, Odds On Equuleus, and Stevensville.

According to his former trainer Mark Capone, Capozzo was “the spitting image of his father, Bettor’s Delight. He was extremely determined with wicked raw speed and never backed down from a fight. He was a great horse who earned his money the hard way.”

Capozzo was bred for stallion duty,” Ribant said. “He’s a gentle, but determined war horse with elite speed, sired by the sport’s most successful pacing stallion ever, Bettor’s Delight. Of the many Bettor’s Delight stallions, only Tall Dark Stranger (1:47.1), Betting Line (1:47.2), and Bettor’s Wish (1:47.3) have faster record times than Capozzo’s 1:48 mark. His dam Annie McGuire N earned $280,060 on the racetrack and was the ninth highest-earning racemare of the prolific, southern hemisphere sire, In The Pocket ($1,537,473), who sired 889 fillies.”

Ribant opined this about the decision to stand Capozzo in Minnesota:

“I feel that the Minnesota program is the most underrated program in the country. Last year in 2023 only 39 3-year-old fillies were registered for the right to race in a dozen MN-sired races, each with a purse of $18,000 or more, not including the $65,000 championship final. You’re not going to find that kind of opportunity in other stakes programs. While Capozzo could have been the fastest sire in several states, standing him in Minnesota presented the best opportunities for breeders and baby owners in the state.”

Capozzo will stand at the premier breeding facility in Minnesota, Bluff Country Equine, for a fee of $2,000 with shipped semen available. Foals will be Minnesota eligible.
