Carl “Zig” Zeigler, 90, dies

Columbus, OH — Carl “Zig” Zeigler, 90, died Oct. 22, 2022.

He bred, trained and drove Standardbreds (mostly trotters) for more than 50 years, starting in the early 1960s on the fair circuit battling with his buddies and rivals Clay Hammer and Donald Wiest. He then moved on to tracks like Liberty Bell and Brandywine.

His first horse was a small framed filly named Keystone Hazy who he purchased from Max Hempt. She would win more than 50 races in her career, as her heart was as big as she was. She continued on as one of his best broodmares and lived until she was 35.
