50th Zweig Memorial on Independence Day at Vernon
The Dr. Harry M. Zweig Memorial, a Grand Circuit trotting stake “Open to the World,” will celebrate its 50th anniversary with top fields of 3-year-old colts and fillies competing for more than $500,000 in purses on the Independence Day holiday evening (July 4) at Vernon Downs.
Update: Fields drawn for Meadowlands Pace elims
The entries are in for the $700,000 (est.) Meadowlands Pace and with 17 declared, there will be two $50,000 eliminations on Saturday (July 6).
Next Generation next Saturday at Scioto
The $150,000 Next Generation, for Ohio-sired 2-year-olds, will be held next Saturday (July 6) at Eldorado Scioto Downs. The evening card will also play host to the $120,000 Moni Maker and Nadia Lobell, open events for 3-year-old filly trotters and pacers, respectively. All six races will be broadcast on Fox Sports 2, as well as through the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association’s Saturday at the Races.

Ken Hanover looks to stay sharp at Big M
Ken Hanover was on his game last week when he won his division of the Graduate Series in a career-best 1:47.4 at The Meadowlands, and the 4-year-old stallion will look to bring another top effort to the Big M on Saturday (June 29) when he meets a deep field of older pacers in the $152,190 Dave Brower Memorial.

A four-pack of stakes with purses totaling over $500,000 plus the first appearance on the same race card of the two horses who make up harness racing’s most intriguing matchup of the year will be presented at The Meadowlands Saturday night (June 29).
Boston Rocks aims to make Pace case
When 3-year-old male pacer Boston Rocks finished fourth in his career debut last season at Tioga Downs, trainer Mike Deters wasn’t discouraged. He was impressed. Boston Rocks got away near the rear of the eight-horse field and was 10-1/4 lengths behind the leader at the race’s midpoint, but paced his second half in :55, came three-wide around the last turn, and was still gaining ground at the finish as he missed by two lengths. Boston Rocks has done nothing since that day to alter Deters’ opinion. The homebred colt has hit the board in 16 of 18 career races, winning six and earning $426,022 for owners Rick Berks and Peter Blood.

The Grand Circuit weekend kicks off on Thursday (June 27) at Woodbine Mohawk Park with the C$53,123 Tompkins-Geers for 2-year-old filly trotters and the C$46,845 Tompkins-Geers for 2-year-old filly pacers.
