Fall is synonymous with The Red Mile and yearling sales. The past weekend saw 33 events starting with the “Bluegrass” Grade 3 events for 2-year-olds on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Saturday night we moved over to Dayton for a night of Grand Circuit Grade 1 and 2 events for 3-year-olds and up.

The Pennsylvania fair circuit came to the Crawford County Fairgrounds in west-central Pennsylvania for a “two-day” program Saturday and Sunday, and seeing as this was the longtime base of legendary Keystone horseman Walter “Boots” Dunn, it seemed nice to see the name “Dunn” associated with the fastest mile ever at the oval.

The favorites made breaks in the $13,500 Sunday (Sept. 28) feature for developing males at Harrah’s Philadelphia, which gave the opportunity to the Captaintreacherous gelding Combative to win in 1:52.4 after an aggressive steer.

The 7-year-old Swedish trotter, Francesco Zet, trained by Daniel Redén and driven by Örjan Kihlström, won the Swedish Championship over 1-5/8 miles in a new world record of 1:54.2f (mile rate) – the old record was 1:54.3f.

Ronnie Gillespie was emotional as he was interviewed in the winner’s circle at Hollywood Gaming at Dayton Raceway on Saturday (Sept. 27). The trainer and driver of Big Ranger had just won the 2025 Ohio Sires Stakes Scarlet Championship for freshman colt trotters, completing an Ohio Triple Crown-winning season.
