Elitlopp winner Hohneck defeated in his backyard

For the first time since the victory in the Elitlopp, Phillipe Allaire-trained Hohneck, with Gabriele Gelormini, raced Sunday afternoon (June 25) at Vincennes in the Group 1-race Prix Rene Balliere with a total purse of 200,000 Euro.

Hokkaido Jiel, on the outside, won the Prix Rene Balliere. Provided photo.

Hohneck was in command most of the trip but was attacked down the stretch by Idao de Tillard, with Clement Duvaldestin, and Hokkaido Jiel, with David Thomain.

Idao de Tillard seemed to be going to win but went off stride under heavy pressure from his driver and on the outside Hokkaido Jiel just managed to put his nose first on the finish line before Hohneck.

Both trotters were timed in 1:51.1 (mile rate) — equaling the race record held by Vivid Wise As, who won the race last year.

It was the first Group 1-race for Hokkaido Jiel, who is a grandson to Ready Cash, as he is sired by Brillantissime.
