Hauser captures 1,000th win at Humboldt

Humboldt, IA — The first day of Iowa-regjstered 2-year-old racing in 2018 was held at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds on Saturday (July 7). Adam Hauser went into the 13-race card with 997 lifetime wins looking to tip his total to more than 1,000.

Featured races began with pacing colts and geldings. Oh Toodles, a Relentless Yankee gelding owned and raised by Debbie Philipp and Shirley Smith, took the first division in 2:04.4. The Scott Smith trainee sped through his last qurater in :29.2. Oh Toodles paced the fastest mile of the day earning him the Larry Frakes Memorial trophy. Rob Anderson piloted the Curtis Carey-trained Frisky Pedro to victory in 2:07 in the second division. The Millionaire Cam gelding is owned by Jeff Carey, Alan Eden and Rick Huffman.

Snobbytown took the first division of 2-year-old pacing fillies in 2:05.3 by nine lengths, the largest winning margin of the day. The Ohio-bred Nob Hill High filly is trained and driven by John Saner and owned by Saner and Lesa Peters. The second division went to Heavy Handed Hanna, a Millionaire Cam filly driven by Will Roland and trained by Curtis Carey. She won in 2:06.4 for owners Jesse Delong, Lindsay Rueckart and Jeff Carey.

Hauser made his first trip to the winners circle with D P Rocket. The All In Tad filly took advantage of her post position one and lead the first division of 2-year-old trotting fillies the entire mile. D P Rocket finished in 2:05.3, earning her first win in three starts for owner Fred Wagner, as well as the Orville Anderson Memorial trophy for trotting the fastest mile of the day. Thomas and Kathy Shipley’s McDuffie filly Bankn-On-Emily won the second division in 2:10 with Royal Roland in the bike.

In his third win in three starts, Lorenza Gooch’s trotter Ricky Be Sharp remained perfect taking the first division of trotting colts and geldings. The American Native gelding started in the second tier in a field of eight, getting off fifth and steadily improving his position throughout the race. With a :31 last quarter he took the lead in the final stretch and crossed the wire in 2:07.3. Increasing his win total to 999, Adam Hauser piloted Dewey’s Machine, a Minnesota-bred Ice Machine gelding to victory in the second division in 2:07.2 for owner/lessee Justin Anfinson.

With feature races complete with race eight, Hauser had two drives left in the remaining five B-class races of the day. He finished last in race nine, a field of six pacing colts, and had one drive left in race 10.

In a field of seven 2-year-old trotting colts and geldings, Hauser was set to drive D P Fireball, a first time starter he trains for his father Davis Hauser. Only two of the seven starters stayed flat for the mile, Broadway Speeder and D P Fireball. The two battled through the final quarter with Broadway Speeder leading by a nose at the head of the stretch. D P Fireball regained the lead just before the grandastand winning by a length in 2:13.4. Hauser earned his 1,000th career driving win.

Iowa racing action returns on Wednesday, (July 11) at Donnellson at the Lee County Fair, the oldest fair in Iowa. Post time has been changed to 7:30 p.m.
