Heza Challenger rallies, takes $20,000 Meadows Trot

by Evan Pattak, for the Meadows

Meadow Lands, PA — More than eight lengths back at the half and stuck on the outside, Heza Challenger launched a sustained move to capture the $20,000 Open/Preferred Handicap Trot on Thursday (April 3) at The Meadows.

Randy Tharps ducked Heza Challenger from the gate, strategy that looked as if it might backfire when the first half went in a moderate :58.3. But when Tharps asked Heza Challenger for trot, the 4-year-old son of Chip Chip Hooray methodically picked off the leaders — even though he was four-wide in the stretch.

He won in 1:56.4, 1-1/4 lengths better than Dyno Trevor in the “Lightning Lane.” Adonis B brushed late for show.
