The 7-year-old mare Joumba de Guez was the favorite to win the Prix de Cornulier at Vincennes, which, with total prize money of 750,000 Euros, is the world’s largest under-saddle race. And the mare did not disappoint her supporters.

Skillfully ridden by Eric Raffin, Joumba de Guez, after leading most of the race, won relatively comfortably, but four horses — almost in line and right behind her — fought for second place. It went to Ina du Rib with Jean Loc Claude Dersoir.
Dersoir has won the Prix de Cornulier four times, as has Raffin, who rode Joumba de Guez to victory.
It was the first time the Bazire family won this major race. What Jean Michel Bazire could not achieve in a long successful career, his 24-year-old son Nicola, who is now responsible for the stable’s horses, managed to do.
It was also the first Prix de Cornulier and biggest victory ever for breeder and owner Rene Guezille and his racing stable, Ecurie Vautors, which has had horses in training with the Bazire family for more than 30 years. Until now, a third place in the Prix d’Amerique with Kazire de Guez had been the best result.
Joumba de Guez is sired by Carat Williams, who is by Prodigious, and the dam of Joumba de Guez is Quoumba de Guez (sired by Urfits de Pres). She was a top racer, setting a record of 1:53.3 (mile rate) and earning 1.2 million Euros. Joumba de Guez, her best offspring, has now earned 742,960 Euros in her career with the victory’s 315,000 Euros.
There were more than 25,000 spectators at Vincennes, where free admission, which 22,000 took advantage of, as well as entertainment and various activities on race day helped create a great atmosphere between the races.
