Nick Mouw, 69, dies

Columbus, OH — Nick Mouw, 69, of Crete, Ill., died after a two-year battle with brain cancer.

He was the son of the late Nick and Edith Mouw, both lifelong trainers and drivers.

He was an Iowa native, and began his racing career after high school and was a regular on the Buffalo/Batavia circuit until he and his mother moved to the Chicago area in 1978, where he campaigned a small stable until 1995.

Mr. Mouw left the horse business, but eventually returned as a farrier for the last five years of his life.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Patricia Palmer Mouw; and two children, Christopher and Cathy. Also, the highlight of his later years were his five grandchildren, Jaxen, Bronson, Lucas Kowalczyk, Max Kowalczyk and Ivy Mae Kowalczyk.

A celebration of life will be held at Balmoral Woods golf course in Crete on May 10, fromĀ 4-8 p.m. Golf attire and barn clothes are welcome.
