Stockholm — As usual, Sweden’s first yearling sale was held Friday (May 29) in connection with Elitloppet. This year’s sale was disappointing compared with last year, as the average price fell by 29.9%.
The highest-priced yearling at the sale was the colt Hitchcock, from Ready Cash’s final crop and out of the Southwind Frank mare Hepburn. He sold for 2.3 million Swedish kronor ($248,000)to CL Trading AB.
Last year, her first foal, Garbo, by Calgary Games, sold for 800,000 kr ($86,400) at the Swedish Derby Sale.
Only two yearlings sold yesterday for more than 1 million kronor ($108,000). Last year, that number was eight.
The second million-krona yearling was Poseidon Mearas, sired by Face Time Bourbon and out of the Muscle Hill mare Gail D Zet. He was purchased by major Gothenburg horse owner Denco AB for 1.35 million kr ($146,000).
This is the dam’s second foal. Last year, the older brother, Odin Mearas, sired by Don Fanucci Zet, sold for 700,000 kr ($75,600) at the Solvalla Yearling Sale.
The highest-priced filly at the sale was Tactical Babe, sired by Tactical Landing). She sold for 575,000 kr ($62,100) to an anonymous buyer.
Compared with last year, the average price dropped by a full 29.9%, from 362,089 kr ($39,123) to 253,804 kr ($27,423). However, this year’s average is close to the 2024 level of 254,946 kr ($27,547).
In total, 79% percent of the horses that entered the ring were sold.
