Sabrina Hitchcock, 44, dies

Columbus, OH — Sabrina Booth Hitchcock, 44, born Aug. 10, 1978, to Robert D. Hitchcock and Susanne Hitchcock in Derby, Conn., died Aug. 5, 2023, after a long and courageous fight with cancer.

Ms. Hitchcock was a wonderful daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She inherited her dry sense of humor and wit from her parents and shared it with her brothers. In particular, she and her brother, Dan, could be counted on at any event together to lead the room in laughter.

She loved watching her nieces and nephews play sports, work with their animals and find their place in the world. She was always available to attend games or events and lend an ear, and, as they aged, a soft place to land away from home. She seamlessly bridged the gap between aunt and friend and counted her eldest niece, Tess, as among her closest friends.

Ms. Hitchcock was a loyal and loving friend and worked hard to foster relationships across decades and geography. She understood the importance of showing up and never missed (but was often late) a celebration for a friend. Weddings, showers, birthdays, and celebrations of all types, you could always depend on hearing her laugh across the room or watching her tear up the dance floor.

She experienced loss in her short life, and therefore, knew the importance of showing up in the quiet moments as well. She never missed an opportunity to help out a friend, and she will be remembered by her loved ones in all the rooms she helped paint and treasures she helped find. Inherited from her mother, she had a wonderful eye for decorating, and her home was a reflection of her, beautiful and understated.

Her entire life, she was a talented athlete. She found joy on the court and field and excelled at softball, basketball, and volleyball in high school, then continued softball and volleyball in college. She played in many softball rec leagues locally and was a valuable and coveted team player.

Many aspects of her life were defined by her love of animals. She received degrees from SUNY Cobleskill, Ferrum College in Virginia, and SUNY Canton and worked as a large animal vet technician for her dear friend and mentor, Dr. Kurt Lutgens of Battenkill Equine, for over 20 years. She was well respected by clients and her colleagues for her calmness under pressure and her work ethic. She was much loved in the Saratoga, N.Y. area — especially at the harness racetrack — as she cared for so many of the horses there over the years.

Ms. Hitchcock best loved being with her friends, family, and animals. Spending time with Eric Simon at Cossayuna, her favorite Sunday Fundays, Supper Club with the Argyle crew, being Super Aunt, girls’ nights, and playing softball were her happiest things. She would want everyone to remember her with her friends and family, laughing that laugh.

Her time on this earth was short, but her impact on friends and family will be eternal. She packed a lot of laughter, fun, and caring into her time, and she faced the end of her life with dignity and the knowledge of a life well spent, without regrets.

If it is said that a person can be judged by who shows up in their time of need, then she was one of the richest among us. While cancer took her from us, it brought out the best in all those who loved her and the friends and family who spent endless hours loving and caring for her. Her fiercely independent spirit hated to need assistance, but she knew and appreciated all those who spent time laughing, crying and loving on her. In particular, her soul sister Ryann Sellar and devoted boyfriend Eric Simon, who moved Heaven and Earth to provide her dignity, compassion and humor in her fight.

Ms. Hitchcock was preceded in death by her father, Robert D. Hitchcock; and grandparents. Left to cherish her memory is her mother, Susanne Hitchcock; boyfriend Eric Simon and his daughter Tayler; brothers and their families, Robert D. Hitchcock II (Michelle) and their children Tess, Caleb, and Jonah; Daniel Hitchcock (Kathryn) and their children Jacob and Ainslie; her dogs, Roz and Daisy; horse, Koda; and a roster of cherished friends and loved ones.

Though a tall ask, she would not want us to cry long. She would want us to pick ourselves up and get back on the dance floor. In her memory, stop to pet a dog or horse, call a loved one, or pick up a cold six pack and sit by the lake with friends enjoying all that life has to offer.
