Vernon, NY – Savage Cindy (Leon Bailey) captured the $121,800 leg of the New York Sire Stakes (NYSS) for sophomore pacing fillies at Vernon Downs on Friday (Aug. 14).
Surreal Spirit (Jeff Gregory) was first to the quarter in a sizzling :25. Two Twenty Swift (Chris Long) then grabbed the top spot, but the lead was short lived as Savage Cindy ($10.76) made her move heading to the backstretch. Odds On Monetary (Matt Kakaley) made a bid for the front as Savage Cindy led to the half in :53. The two fillies battled around the final turn. Savage Cindy shook loose to three quarters in 1:20.3.
As they reached the stretch, second-place finisher Odds On Monetary came back at the leader but Savage Cindy dug in and won by a length and a half with a personal best and a track record for sophomore fillies in 1:49.3. Surreal Spirit finished third.
Savage Cindy is a filly by Huntsville. She is owned by Scarlett Stables and trained by Cory Stratton. It was her third win this season and fifth career victory.
Bailey drove three winners on the card.
