Track records set at Washington

Washington, PA — Fourteen stakes events for sophomores ended the two-day race meet at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Washington, Pa., and it was a record setting day for one driver and two trainers — with the same name.

A pair of track records fell in consecutive heats of the PA Sire Stake colt pace — with a very similar owner/trainer/driver combination.

Straight Character lowered the all-age track record to 1:57.2 on Tuesday.

First up was Straight Character, a colt by Shady Character, owned and trained by Bob Krenitsky, Jr. Driver Brian Zendt sent the colt right to the lead from the outside five post and he cut fractions of :29.1, :57.3 and 1:27.3. Straight Character was never challenged, going on to win in 1:57.2, the fastest mile ever in the history of the track. The previous mark was 1:57.3, set by Talk All Day in 2008. For Straight Character, it was victory number seven in 19 starts on the year.

In the second colt pace, going for the day’s richest pacing purse at $5,833, Stately’s Revenge (The Panderosa), also driven by Zendt, cut fractions of :29, :58.3 and 1:28.4 before finishing the mile in 1:57.3, just one fifth off the overall record set in the previous race, but still good enough to be a track record for 3-year-old pacing geldings. Stately’s Revenge is owned by Barb and Bob Krenitsky — Bob Jr.’s parents — and trained by Bob Sr.

The third track record of the day came in a division of the sophomore filly trot by Caviar And Kisses, out of the Boots Dunn Stable. The SJ’s Caviar filly scored in a speedy 2:02.3 for driver Brian Zendt. The mile was a track record for sophomore trotting fillies.

In the first division of the 3-year-old filly trot, Leola was a wire-to-wire winner for driver Wayne Long in 2:04.3. Ellen Warren owns the Wonder Dancer filly, while Joyce Lineweaver earned the training victory.

In the second filly trot, Whisk Hanover picked up his first win on the fair circuit this season, trotting in 2:03.4 for trainer/driver Marty Wollam. Owned by James Beluscak and Bob Carson, Whisk Hanover is a Cantab Hall filly.

In the opener for filly pacers, My Gal Mykenna (Real Artist) continued her hot streak, winning for the seventh consecutive time by pacing in 2:00. Roger Hammer and Nevin Gilbert own the filly, while Hammer trains and was in the bike. My Gal Mykenna has now topped $25,000 in earnings this season with eight wins in 11 starts.

In the second division, Fluffy Slippers survived a rough first-over trip to get up in the final strides for a 2:02.3 victory with Jordon Miller in the bike. After starting her career 0-for-30, Fluffy Slippers has now won two in a row with Miller at the lines. Vincent and Scott Aiello own the daughter of Village Jolt, while Jeff Indof trains.

The final filly pacing division was won by Bliss Falcon, as Hammer made a return visit to the winner’s circle. A Blissfull Hall filly, Bliss Falcon paced her mile in 2:02.3. Hammer owns and trains as well.

Two $5,838 colt trotting splits ended Sire Stake action, with victories earned by Marjoe Hall (Tom Ridge) and Southwind Nitro (SJ’s Caviar).

Marjoe Hall gave Zendt his third straight driving win, covering the mile in a lifetime best 2:03.2 The Dunn Stable owns, while Boots Dunn trains.

Southwind Nitro picked up his seventh win in 11 starts on the season, trotting in 2:02.3. The colt is owned by Susan Daugherty, while Bill Daugherty trains and drove.

Quaker Stakes, for PA-owned or PA-sired horses, concluded the meet. In the first Quaker pace, Riverbloom won her second straight, pacing in a life-best 2:03.3 for owner/driver Cory Kreiser. John Kreiser trains the daughter of Riverboat King.

Whiting Hanover, trained and driven by Steve Schoeffel, won the second division in 2:01.3, also a lifetime mark. The Dragon Again gelding has now won two out of his last three starts for owners Virginia and Kathy Schoeffel.

The first Quaker trot was won easily by Anastasia Paul, in rein to Bill Daugherty. Joe Urban owns and trains the gelding by Trainforthefuture. The winning time was 2:09.3.

In the final race of the meet, Lady Latke went wire-to-wire for owner/trainer/driver Bruce Dufford in 2:08.3. A daughter of Family Firm, Lady Latke won for the first time in 15 seasonal starts.

The circuit moves northeast to Armstrong County and the Dayton Fairgrounds for two days of action beginning Wednesday (August 18) at 1 p.m. For video highlights from the PA Fair Circuit, visit www.pafairharness.com.
